| The 51st IETF Report Meeting( September 25TH , 2001) |
|
|
As described below, we held a report meeting on the 51st IETF Conference, in which many members and associates of the Internet Association of Japan participated, as part of our efforts to foster international fellowship in interoperability technologies of information processing. Especially notable was an explanation by Mr. Eiichi Wada, a supreme advisor to Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., of the significance of the 54th IETF Conference to be held in July 2002. The first one ever to be held in Asia, Japan was chosen as the location for the Conference since a large number of Internet drafts (documents proposing new Internet technologies) are coming out of Japan, and the number is constantly growing. This is highly meaningful.

INTAP holds the IETF report meeting co-sponsored by Internet Association of Japan, the Japanese branch of the Internet Society (ISOC), Internet Technology Research Committee and Educational-industrial Cooperative Committee of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (ITRC). As the information-technology society rapidly advances, it is important for a wider range of people to share the latest technical trends of the Internet and to participate in discussions on standardization.
With this background, the following symposium will be held to exchange information on the latest trends of Internet technology standardization, with the cooperation of four Internet-related bodies.
Guidance and application forms are available on INTAPfs home page (http://www.intap.or.jp/INTAP/seminar/index.html). All those concerned are encouraged to participate.
Overview of the Symposium
- The symposium will be held over two days. The first day will be for a wide range of participants including Internet-related managers to gain an overview of Internet technology from a broad perspective.

Note
IETF is an organization that conducts practical activities to determine international standards for Internet protocols together with Internet organizations, and holds three meetings a year. The 47th IETF meeting (March 26-31 in Adelaide, Australia) for this reporting meeting was followed by the 48th IETF meeting from July 30 (Sunday) to August 4 (Friday) in 2000 in Pittsburg, USA. The reporting meeting will be held at the beginning of September.
For details of the 48th IETF meeting, see http://www.IETF.org/
Overview of IETF
IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) is an open international community of groups of network designers, operators, vendors and researchers for the development of Internet architecture and smooth operation of the Internet. Anyone interested in related issues is able to participate.
The technical work of the IETF is performed by working groups divided into several sections for each topic (such as routing, transport, and security). Most work is performed by those on the main list, and three meetings are held a year.
Working groups in each field are managed by Area Directors (ADs). Area Directors are members of IESG (Internet Engineering Steering Group). The architecture is supervised by IAB (Internet Architecture Board) and appeals on issues regarding IESG are also adjudicated by IAB. IAB and IESG are authorized by ISOC (The Internet Society). The General Area Director chairs the IESG and IETF, and serves as a member of IAB.
IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) plays a major role in allocating specific parameter values for Internet protocols. IANA is authorized by ISOC to allocate usage of a number of Internet protocol parameters and to make adjustments. The Tao of the IETF is a good reference for those participating in the meeting for the first time.
